Our Purpose

In 2015 the Sutherland Estate offered the community the opportunity to purchase 3000 acres of land in the area close to Helmsdale. The decision to go ahead and try to buy the land was made after a ballot which saw a vote cast by 76% of the community and a return of 96% in favour of the buy out going ahead.

Our Approach

The Directors of Garbh Allt have been working for the past two years since this offer was made towards the goal of bringing the currently owned Sutherland Estate land into community ownership. The sale completed and was announced in June 14th 2018.

All efforts thus far have been achieved through voluntary effort, focused mainly on securing funding from The Scottish Government via the Scottish Land Fund (administered via Highlands and Islands Enterprise and The Big Lottery) and  from Scottish & Southern Energy so ready to achieve the sale.
